The Black Star Line All-Star Swim Team is an Oakland-based
organization established to encourage the participation of
African-American youth in the sport of swimming. Our goals are to
encourage youth to utilize swimming as a recreational activity, to
maintain a healthy lifestyle, to develop competitive drive and
determination as well as a survival life skill.
Our team is in its second year of existence. In our first year, we
recruited 27 predominately African American swimmers who
competed in the 20th Annual Historical Black Swim Meet in
Washington, DC in February 2006. One of the many benefits of
competing in Black swim meets is our African American swimmers
having the opportunity to compete against swimmers who excel in
competition as well as share cultural ties and experiences. The
atmosphere is breath-taking with positive encouragement from
swimmers, coaches, officials, families and friends from around the
country who acknowledge the value of swimmers of Afrikan
Ancestry in healthy competition.
One of the goals for our second year is recruit 50 swimmers of
Afrikan Ancestry to compete in the 21st Annual Historical Black
Swim Meet in Washington, DC in February 2007 and the 5th
Annual Black Heritage Swim Meet in North Carolina in May 2007.
To accomplish this goal, we need your support. We are asking for
your financial sponsorship of these young athletes. With your
tax-deductible donation, you will help at least one child participate
in these swim meets.
The Urban Services YMCA serves as the fiscal agent for Black Star
Line All-Star Swim Team in securing donations and contributions.
The Urban Services YMCA is recognized as a tax-exempt
(non-profit) organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal
Revenue Service Code. Therefore, your contributions will not only
contribute to a worthy cause but will also be tax-deductible. Please
